'my personal universe' installation by zhan wang
chinese sculptor zhan wang has created a sculpture and video installation at the ullens center for contemporary art in beijing entitled 'my personal universe'. the exhibition is a conceptualization of the moment of the creation of the universe through the big bang theory.
one component to 'my personal universe' is a high-definition video having captured the detonation of a bomb which shattered a giant boulder just outside the suburbs of shandong, china. the sight was captured through the use of six video cameras capturing 2,000 frames per second positioned at various angels around the explosion in order to create a truly encompassing film. the three minute video is projected upon the walls of the gallery space in a continual loop. the sculptural aspect to the exhibition includes a collection of mirrored stainless steel rocks created by wang, suspended from the ceiling which emulate the naturally haphazard way in which the boulder was detonated. the gallery goer wanders through the space, amongst the suspended boulders and video, existing in what wanghas fashioned as a modern manifestation of the moment of universal creation.
